Installing Decorative Shutters for Windows
The purpose of operable window shutters is to protect your windows and add some security to your property, as well as bringing their timeless aesthetic appeal to the house. As such, they need to be fitted precisely in order to close and latch in the middle of the glass window. Decorative shutters, on the other hand, do not close and are there solely to add a little style to the property. In this case, you will generally need to consider a different set of guidelines when measuring up for the shutters. There are a number of factors to take into account.
Width and height of decorative shutters
Given that the purpose of decorative shutters is to bring some colour and class to your property, rather than protect the windows, their width does not need to be governed solely by the size of the windows they are fixed to. Some people prefer to install shutters that look like they could close over the window, which has some sense. But as a general rule, you should choose a set width of shutter and use that for every window on the house to give a sense of uniformity. The width will depend on a number of factors, including size and spacing of windows.
In terms of height, decorative shutters should generally stretch from the top to the bottom of the window trim – not the glass, which appears too short, or longer than this, which similarly appears out of proportion. If there is a window sill, shutters can obviously not be positioned below this, but you should also leave a small gap between the bottom of the shutter and the sill. This is to allow the shutter material to expand and contract in different weather conditions.
Determining the size of decorative shutters
If you want your decorative shutters to look like they could shut, then they obviously each need to be half the width of the window (from the edges of the trim). Incidentally, if you are installing operable shutters then you should ensure that they really can shut – some windows, especially in older houses, are not perfect rectangles. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and if the results vary then use the smallest one.
The width that looks right for decorative shutters will be different, depending on the sizes of the windows on your house and their spacing. Another factor you should consider is the style of shutters on other houses in your immediate area. In the interests of architectural uniformity – so that your house doesn’t stand out as odd-looking – take a look around your neighbourhood and check what other people have installed. There may be conventions for unusually narrow shutters, or ones that do not cover the trim of the windows, only the glass.
All things being equal, however, the general rule is that a width of between a quarter and a third of the width of the window (including trim) are about right for decorative shutters. Unlike with operable shutters, there is a little more leeway in deciding the appropriate size, so you do not have to worry unduly about your measurements being precise. This is also helpful since shutters tend to come in standard sizes and it is considerably more costly to have bespoke ones made.
Conclusion
Decorative shutters can make an attractive addition to a house, but make sure that you measure up carefully and check other houses in the immediate area to make sure that yours are correctly proportioned. Unless there is a different local convention or you wish to install shutters that look like they could close, you should usually opt for shutters that are slightly narrower than the window they are decorating.

It is a stain on my wall
I hate the wallpaper. I don’t know why, I just don’t. So when I married my husband, I asked his permission (he bought the House three years before we even met), take him out and just use the pain. He agreed, and I began my project. I had no idea what I find.
The first group had over was painted. I thought that would make it easier to remove, as it was peeling, but not so lucky. After I have done, I went to the kitchen.
The wallpaper in the kitchen was white, with a kind of quilted design. If new, maybe it was ok, but it had to go after years of grease and dirt from cooking,. It was also peeling, so I was hopeful. I have not been.
It was not only uncooperative with remove, I found that the previous owner it had with red glue to put. Large red dots, unevenly distributed, greeted me, when the paper finally came out. Now, would certainly remove a coating or two this ugly red spot.
Did I mention that I was rather inexperienced when I this? I would have.
After two layers my wall looked still, as it had measles. “Hm,” I thought. “Maybe some LaTeX…”.
Perplexed, I went local home improvement store and my history of suffering for the poured out. “You have it first prepare?”, asked the experienced writers. “Prime?”
Loaded with two buckets primer, I went back to my Bespeckled wall. After two layers, which were the points, at least, faded. I have to paint two more regular flat tab and pretended that I could no longer see the points. It has helped, as I the wall to my collection of Jello Mold to hang.
A few years later, we have a contractor to paint the inside of the House. He took a look at the kitchen wall and said: “Why is red dots on your wall?”
Learning How To Build A Shed With Easy Woodworking Plans
How to Build a Shed and Where to Put it
The first consideration when building a shed is deciding upon the location. Take the time to figure out exactly what you want to use the shed for and how big it must be for whatever you want to put in it.
Once you have decided on the actual measurements and footprint of your shed, choose your location. Make sure that the area is flat or can be made flat fairly easily. It is important that the site for building a shed is clear of all grass and level before you start to build.
It is also a good idea, depending upon where you live, that you check out the local zoning restrictions first to be sure that you are in compliance.
Finding the Right Plans
Undoubtedly, the most important requirement when learning how to build a shed is a set of good quality plans. The ideal plans should cover everything in complete detail. Good woodworking plans will guide you through the complete project, starting with a complete list of materials and tools that you will need right down to the type of wood you should use.
Buying online is a good option, and I have run across quite a few sources for woodworking plans online. The best plans that I have found for someone who wants to learn how to build a shed were from Teds Woodworking. There were other plans available online, both free and paid versions, but the free ones weren’t all that great and the plans offered by Teds were just better than the others I looked at and very affordable.
A Few Tips
If this is your first project and you are truly learning how to build a shed, it is important to stay organized. Once you have all the materials and tools needed for building a shed, keep everything together and close to your chosen site. It is a very good idea to cut all your wood ahead of time according the dimensions outline in the plans.
1. Start with the foundation and make sure that it is square. This is an important step, as a foundation that is not square will throw everything else off when you build the shed. Make sure that the corners are 90 degrees, assuming that your shed is either square or rectangular and has only four walls, and take diagonal measurements from corner to corner for accuracy.
2. Build the floor first and check to make sure that it is square in the same way that you did with the foundation. The walls should be built flat on the floor and then raised into place. Once the walls are raised and tacked in place check the top of the walls to be sure that they are still square. When you are satisfied that the walls are square, complete the nailing.
3. At this point you have pretty much learned how to build a shed. All that is left to do is add the roof and your basic structure is complete.
4. All that is left are the final touches. These will vary depending upon your shed design and needs. Start with the roof, which is usually plywood covered with shingles or standing seam metal, or whatever material you have chosen. Then do the exterior walls, hang the doors, and if your plan called for windows, install them.
Once you have learned how to build a shed the styles and options are endless. You can build it in as simple or an elaborate manner as you like. The best way to learn how to build a shed is with the best information and guides possible. Visit the Woodworking Today website and review what I consider the best shed plans online today.

Ladder Safety Tips for a Step Ladder
Ladder safety starts at home. The habits of the family are generally passed onto the children. One of those habits is the use and often misuse of a Step Ladder.
Even a Step Ladder can be dangerous if common sense is not used. There are 160,000 reported injuries each year from ladders, many of these would be due to lack of precautions and safety. Unfortunately many injuries result in the user being seriously injured even becoming a paraplegic or quadriplegic.
Personal Experiences with Ladders:
Step Ladder: The next door neighbor was painting his front porch ceiling using a 6 foot aluminum step ladder. He had a drop sheet under the ladder to protect the floor tiles. The ladder slipped, he fell and injured his spine and became a paraplegic. After many operations he lived his life in a wheelchair and passed away a few years later.
His fall was only a few feet, but his life and his families lives were changed forever from a simple accident.
Extension Ladder: This time it was a happy outcome. I had a roof plumber repairing the roof. His extension ladder was propped against the house, he went for his morning tea break. My three year old son decided to be one of the guys. The tradesman came back from his tea break, looked up and saw the three year old walking along the ridge capping. The tradesman very calmly called me, pointed to the roof. We treated it like a game, the tradesman climbed onto the roof, I calmly talked my son over him, who scooped him up, carried him down to safety. The tradesman and I looked at each other, swore, let a sigh of relief out and thanked God for keeping my son safe.
Ladders are an essential piece of equipment for some many places and so many uses like:
at home – changing light bulbs, cleaning gutters, painting
the trades person – from electricians to carpenters to painters
the warehouse – for stacking goods, general maintenance
industrial and building sites – for trades people…the list is almost endless.
The concern with using ladders is the potential to fall.
Ladder Safety Tips – NEVER:
1) stand on the top step – the stress on the ladder can make it wobble
2) over reach – a good tip is always keep your belt buckle within the rails of the ladder
3) attempt to move the ladder whilst standing on it – this method is called “walking
4) place ladder under electrical cables – especially aluminum step ladders, metal is a conductor of electricity, so is the human body. Use a wooden or fiberglass ladder.
5) place on un-stable, un-level, wet or slippery surfaces, this is a disaster waiting to happen, just as my friend’s unfortunate experience shared above
6) use when injured, tired or under the influence of substances including medication
7) leave any ladder unattended – as my example above, children love to climb.
Ladder Safety Tips – ALWAYS:
1) fully open the ladder – don’t prop it against a wall and climb it, a step ladder is not designed for this purpose
2) secure the braces – Hint: the braces are there for a reason
3) climb to the first step, stop and ensure the ladder is stable by giving it a gentle wobble
4) always retain hold onto the ladder with at least one hand and wear good robust shoes
5) remove tools on the top of the ladder, especially screwdrivers, chisels, hammers, knives even paint. It is so easy to forget there are items on the top of ladder, if the ladder is moved, something hard, sharp or wet could be coming down on top of you or your surroundings very soon
6) make sure the ladder can take your weight plus any additional items like tools
7) work with someone else around, in case there is an accident immediate help is nearby
Follow these ladder safety tips for step ladders and enjoy a safe work environment.

Learn How to Make a Solar Panel
All that solar energy that was once wasted is today harnessed into electricity using solar panels. You can either buy your panels, or make one at home using items found at home or the hardware store.
Here are the steps involved in learning how to make a solar panel.
The first thing you have to do is buy some solar cells, to harness and turn solar energy into usable electricity. If you can afford it, you could buy the more expensive brand new ones. However if want to learn how to make a solar panel by spending only about $200, look for solar cells that cost between $50 and $100. With these solar cells, you will be able to create a small panel that produces at least 12 volts of electricity.
Then again, if you don’t find solar cells of this size at that price, look for second-rate cells. Of course, while these solar cells will not work as efficiently as perfect-condition cells, they are perfect to create cheap, small panels.
With your solar cells ready, you need a battery to store your electricity. The best option you have is to buy a rechargeable deep-cycle 12-volt battery which you can continuously used and store energy. A $50 battery should be sufficient to suit the needs of a small solar panel, with a battery box, for safety purposes.
You also need a $10-15 DC input to run your appliances on the electricity your panel produces. The choice of the DC input depends on the products you wish to power. In case of appliances that run on AC power, you will have to buy an AC inverter to power these appliances. For example, in case you want to power a small television, you require a 100+ watt inverter, that costs about $50.
Now that you have everything that you require to make a solar panel, you have to connect everything to the battery. You have to use insulated wires to do this, and always starting from the negative battery pole, connect the DC inlet to the battery, one wire at a time. Repeat the procedure with the panel.
The benefit of this system is that it can be expanded into a larger battery or solar panel or both. The amount of electricity this panel produces depends on the solar cells you use in it and the weather. Of course, the top quality ones produce maximum electricity when used in maximum sunlight.
These panels run different appliances for different amounts of time. While televisions may run for a few hours on a fully charged battery, you can use a radio the whole night on the same battery.
On an average, if you learn how to make a solar panel this way, you spend about $215 on it. However you can always make a larger or smaller panel with different outputs, based on your budget and requirements. These well-made panels are a one time investment in providing you with all the power you require for many years.
There are many ways to reduce the cost of the electric bill. On our website you will find articles about alternative energy and how to save money. For example, you will find information about DIY wind turbine and how to make a solar panel.
Lindapter Fixing Supports
Fixing equipment to steel beams can be a problem but the Lindapter system of clamps provide a wide range of clamping systems that meet all occasions. The advantage of a system like this is that the equipment can be fixed into a position that is either temporary or permanent and it can still be changed at a moment’s notice.
For fixing a set of lights into position, the fixings are ideal as they can be fitted easily without any welding or drilling and bolting; this saves a tremendous amount of time in fitting the lights. The position of the light can then be an also be changed quickly and accurately by just loosening the clamps and repositioning the light and then re-tightening the clamps. Complete banks of lights can be fixed in the same way to provide a complete in factory lighting circuit.
Any changes in the lighting system can be carried out in minutes with the aid of a good electrician and a capable engineer. This would be particularly useful with the introduction of new energy-saving lighting systems where massive savings can be made by using energy-saving lights which use less than a third of the power of the original light. In this the whole lighting chain can be changed quickly and cheaply.
The same system can be used for temporary applications such as stage shows, exhibition work or sporting events where the lighting systems need rapid erection and dismantling prior to and after the finish of the show or sporting event. The Lindapter system provides quick and easy assembly and even quicker dismantling. In these cases the lights are usually fitted with cable and plug fittings so they can be safely erected and plugged in to the lighting circuit by just a competent steel erector.
The clamp systems are such that they can clamp to either vertical, horizontal or angled beams and still project the light in the direction required. This is carried out by using a straight forward Lindapter clamp with an angled or swivelled jointed piece that can be clamped onto the light. The swivel or angled part can then be aligned to provide light in the correct place.
Many lights themselves have swivel joints that can provide yet another dimension to the light movement. The clamps are very sturdy and tested for weights far in excess of any lighting systems and so are perfectly safe for an overhead operation.
